Youths mark #EndSARS memorial in Oyo

Scores of youths in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on Wednesday, organised a one-year anniversary of the End SARS protests.

Scores of youths in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on Wednesday, organised a one-year anniversary of the End SARS protests.

The #EndSARS protests were held in October 2020, against the activities of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit of the Nigeria Police Force which was accused of police brutality.

The Oyo State Police Command, on Tuesday, warned against the commemoration of the protests.

Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, had in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, advised parents and guardians not to allow their children to take part in the protest.

The police, in a bid to resist the protesters, stationed their vehicles and officers at strategic locations, including Mokola Roundabout, Sango, University of Ibadan, Agbowo junction, Dugbe, and Oyo State Secretariat.

However, protesters on Wednesday occupied Iwo Road, Agodi and Oyo State Secretariat, noting that they had the right to peaceful protests.

The protesters, who carried Nigerian flags, said that they were protesting peacefully.

They also called for the release of the detained leader of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
